Luminiferous Aether: did Einstein mislead the world for 100 years?

This website is dedicated to the Aether, Aether theory, and Harold Aspden who for more than 50 years meticulously researched the Luminiferous Aether and outlined where Science had gone wrong. The result of his research effort are contained in this website. As will be pointed out in the books, papers, and blogs to follow, a mistake in a fundamental hypothesis/theory (such as Aether theory) lead to very significant complications in the subsequent extensions of electromagnetic theory that are not easily resolved. The theory of gravity, quantum theory, and electromagnetics become overly convoluted when one mistake leads to a compounding of errors and assumption. Like a lie that must be carefully tracked, the propagated lie (i.e. that there is no Aether), leads to excessive complexity in gravitation theory, quantum mechanics, and the theory of ‘everything’ that have not been resolved to this day. The theory’s that result from a more complete and modern perspective associated with the Aether are no more complicated than high school chemistry, but one needs lots of background if you are to read and understand the papers of Harold Aspden. To begin this study, lets start witht a little history:

As far back as 360 BC Plato in his Timaeus (dialogue) and later his student Aristotle described the Aether as the as the “fifth element”. It wasn’t until the 17th and 18th century when physicists began to associate the Aether with light transmission, electromagnetic propagation, and gravitational forces, that the modern concept of the Aether was born.

The idea of the aether was always compelling mainly due to the self-evident experiences of life, such as the direct observation that a pebble thrown into a pond dissipates energy in the form of waves that emanate from the center of the original disturbance. Similarly, sound is a wave transmission through the air, or other physical matter. The transmission of light however remained a mystery: how did the light from a star travel through the vacuum of space, and through what? With the further discovery of radio waves the physicist of the time were still asking: what is the medium that hosts the propagation of such Radio Frequency (RF) waves? The question was perplexing since radio waves (light) also appeared to be capable of transmission through a vacuum, that is through ‘nothing’, hence the indirect conclusion that that the radio wave also had a medium (the Aether) that could as of yet not be detected. This medium was hypothesized as the Aether, or Luminiferous Aether.

By 1861 the idea of the Aether, and experimental evidence, was well established and formulated into the now well know electromagnetic equations defined by James Clerk Maxwell (Maxwell’s equations). These equation are still to this day extremely accurate and representative of real world electrodynamic events that occur around us. They cover the theory of magnetic fields, electric field, radio propagation, and RF energy transmission, with direct applications to everything electrical including: disk drives, computers, fiber optics, radio, TV, phones, and the internet .

This obvious success of Aether theory received a serious blow between 1887 and again in 1902 -1905 when the Michelson–Morley experiment’s detection of the “aether wind” at that time proved to be impossible.

This set of experiments directly lead to Einstein’s proposal in 1905 that the Aether did not exist, further leading to special relativity.
